lyrics

I drew a gun to my disorder blew it clear across my shoulder
So that I could start all over again
And as the buckshot barrel echoed I could hear my woman bellow
“Dear God, what have you done you stupid man”

She said, “We’re drowning in our debt and can’t afford another loan
And if we miss the mortgage we’ll be forced to leave the home
How could you take your life away from both your wife and kid
Good God, how dare you do just what you did”

Free from all the muddled matter I felt lighter than a feather
As the angels brought my soul to heaven’s gate
But there was not one joyous sound as I approached the hallowed ground
And it was clear that Pete would choose a different fate

He said, “It’s come to my attention, there are things we must address
Like if your wife should stiff the bank then they’ll have to repossess
How could you take your life away from both your wife and kid
Good God, how dare you do just what you did”

I watched all my plans unravel as his fingers graced the gavel
I was doomed unless I thought on my feet
I promised Peter I’d pay penance, to receive a softer sentence
One that doesn’t scorn with devil horns and heat

He said, “It’s really not my nature but I’ll grant you one more chance
To prove that you are worthy of our Lord and Savior’s hand
But, clemency’s revoked if I should hear that you have sinned
Go on, just go undo just what you did”

I was sent back down to Earth to prove my piety and worth
By tilling dirt for all the crops my wife must sow
But on the moment I arrived my heart could not believe my eyes
For there I stood inside a body not my own

Falling on all fours I cursed the lord for being cruel
Old Saint Peter placed my soul inside the body of a mule
Forever forced to bear the burden of my wife’s unyielding whip
Good God, how dare you do just what you did
